Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in #870 Shocking Coral Review, Photos, and Swatches

Hey Guys!

I saw Maybelline had released the new Color Sensational Vivids lipsticks a little while ago, but past them in the store because I didn't think I needed another lipstick. I was wrong. I started seeing swatches of the 10 shades that are in this new line of lipsticks and realized I needed to pick up a few.

The shades include: #860 Pink Pop, #865 Fuschia Flash, #870 Shocking Coral, #875 Vivid Rose, #880 Electric Orange, #885 Vibrant Mandarin, #890 Neon Red, #895 On Fire Red, #900 Hot Plum, #905 Brazen Berry.

"Now bright goes gorgeous, never garish. Brighter color from our exclusive vivid pigments. Creamier feel from nourishing honey nectar." - Maybelline.com
From Left to Right: Shocking Coral, Fuschia Flash, Pink Pop

I ended up picking up three shades, but may go back for one or two more: #860 Pink Pop, #865 Fuschia Flash and #870 Shocking Coral. This review will focus solely on the later, Shocking Coral

I really like bright, bold lips because wearing them alone makes a beautiful statement lip, but you can also tone them down with a nude to have a much more wearable colour. Initially seeing Shocking Coral it reminded me of MAC Vegas Volt lipstick, but upon closer inspection, Vegas Volt was much more orange and Shocking Coral pulled much more pink. I then compared it to MAC Watch Me Simmer which was a limited edition lipstick and they were quite similar, but Watch Me Simmer was slightly darker.

Shocking Coral is extremely vivid, but looks different on the lips than it does in the tube. The colour is more reminiscent of the sticker that's on the bottom of the tube than the actual product itself. If you like bold colours, you are going to love this line. As you know, I can't pass up a coral lipstick as coral is my favourite shade to wear. With one swipe you will have fully pigmented lips. The formula is extremely moisturizing and even looking at the tube it almost looks wet. Since the formula is fairly moisturizing, the colour doesn't last long on the lips. The wear time is still fairly good, but will need a touch up after a few hours or after drinking or eating. The packaging is very sleek which also is a positive in my books. I'm really excited for this line as the formula and colours blew me out of the water. I can't wait to rock these this spring/summer!

Retail Value: $7.49 US / $9.99 CAD for 0.15 oz

OVERALL:

Pros:

  • Extremely pigmented
  • Opaque coverage
  • Moisturizing and comfortable on the lips
  • Easily accessible at the drugstore

Cons:

  • Doesn't wear longer than 2-3 hours without a touch up
  • Colour isn't true to the tube for this shade
